The Word of God. Islam appeared in the form of a book: the Quran. Muslims, consider the Quran (sometimes spelled "Koran") to be the Word of God as transmitted by the Angel Gabriel, in the Arabic language, through the Prophet Muhammad. The Muslim view, moreover, is that Quran supersedes earlier revelations; it is regarded as their summation and completion. It is the final revelation, as Muhammed is regarded as the final prophet - 'the Seal of the Prophets.'

In a very real sense the Quran is the mentor of millions of Muslims, Arab and non-Arab alike; it shapes their everyday life, anchors them to a unique system of law, and inspires them by its guiding principles. Written in noble language, the Holy Text has done more than move multitudes to tears and ecstasy; it has also, almost fourteen hundred years, illuminated the lives of Muslims with its eloquent message of uncompromising monotheism, human dignity, righteous living, individual responsibility, and social justice. For countless millions, consequently, it has been the single most important force in guiding their religious, social, and cultural lives. Indeed, the Quran is the cornerstone on which the edifice of Islamic civilization has been built.

Large Handwritten Koran Approximately 10 x 14" and roughly 200 pages. Circa 1600s. Beautifully inscribed with a feather pen. Original leather cover is fragile and partially intact. However, inside pages are quite nice considering exterior. Very Good.
Estimated Value $750 - 1,000.

Manuscript Document in their names, 19 pages on velum, with extensive illumination on the first page, bound in stamped and gold-tooled brown calf, small folio, Valladolid, December 20, 1548.

Philip II (1527- 1598), King of Spain (1556-1598). Only son of Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. Married four times, once to Mary I of England, becoming joint sovereign of England in 1554. Philip was given the government of Milan (1540), of Naples and Sicily (1554), of the Netherlands (1555), and of Spain (1556), where he waged a successful war against France. As the champion of the Counter-Reformation, he tried to destroy infidels and heretics alike. He sought to crush Protestantism, first in the Low Countries, then in England and France, and the result of this determination was the Inquisition which terrorized Europe, and at great cost, failed to put down the revolt in the Netherlands (1568-1609). Conquered Portugal (1580-81), but lost naval supremacy with the defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588) in war with England.

Manuscript Document Signed as King. One page, Folio, with integral address leaf, in Spanish, Madrid, January 26, 1575. This striking document is a royal directive to the magistrate of the cities of Rronda and Marvella, requesting a full accounting of all:

" …the goods and property and other things, which in the said city of Marvella and its jurisdiction, have been seized from the English from the time we ordered you to do so (and we also want to know) about the deposition of the aforementioned goods; who was in charge of them, and what may have been done with them; what their present condition is; what people are presently in charge of them, and how much each has in his possession. We charge and command you to send us, as soon as this information is available a brief accounting of it all, so that once we have seen it we may issue orders as to what should be done. From Madrid, the 26th of January, 1575. I, the King." Co-signed, "By command of His Majesty Juan Delgado." A fascinating document that reveals the meticulous authoritarian secular control of the Spanish crown.

The document was sealed with red wax and an overlaid embossed seal, which has been removed. Light age-toning, some ink bleedthrough from verso, a few stains below the text, and two areas of ink erosion, affecting two words in the text, which are nevertheless clearly legible. Still, the document is fine, and the imperial signatures are bold and forbidding. Matted and framed with a color print of Phillip II and a full translation, to an overall size of 25½ x 27."
Estimated Value $800 - 1,200.

Rasputin, Grigory. This Siberian peasant, who gained access to the highest circles of power in Russia and exerted great influence over the Russian royal family, never learned to write in more than a rudimentary fashion. He was probably born in the late 1860's; after about twenty years in which he did a great deal of wandering, and during which time he established a reputation as a holy man with unusual powers. Rasputin arrived on the scene in St. Petersburg in 1907. He apparently had real abilities as a healer, and after saving the life of the Crown Prince Alexei several times, he gained unprecendented access to the household of Czar Nicholas II and the devotion of the Czarina Alexandra. Jealousy and disapproval of Rasputin's licentious behavior made him many enemies. When World War I began he opposed it on the ground that it would be disastrous for Russia, but at first the war had tremendous popular support, and consequently, Rasputin became even more hated. At the same time, the Czar's preoccupation with the war left greater power in the hands of the Czarina, who was very much under Rasputin's influence. Every faction from far left to far right had some reason to despise him. There were efforts by his enemies, sometimes successful, to oust him from St. Petersburg (but he always managed to return); and there were plots against his life. By 1915 Rasputin, who was rather naive in matters of political intrigue when he came to the capital, had immersed himself in its corruption, plotting and influence peddling. Colin Wilson, one of his many biographers, theorizes that Rasputin sensed his own fate was bound up with that of the royal family; if they were to survive, it would be his doing, and if they were to fall, he was doomed. Rasputin began more and more to behave carelessly and self-destructively, like a doomed man which he was. Rasputin was assassinated at the end of 1916, and the Romanov dynasty fell soon after.

This letter, with its humanitarian purpose, seems to represent the positive side of Rasputin's personality, which also harbored the healer and mystic. Certainly he was more than the evil, unbalanced monk which he is often portrayed as. A very interesting and extremely rare autograph letter of one of the most fascinating and unique characters in Russian history. The actual autograpgh of Rasputin is very rare in any form and an ALS such as this must be considered a true treasure. Russian religious and political figure who had a powerful influence on the last royal family of Russia.

Autograph Letter Signed "Rasputin," in Russian, One page, Large Octavo, [St. Petersburg?], no date, with the name "T. Zenif" written in another hand at the top. There is also a handstamp on the integral leaf in the shape of an inverted triangle with the words "Highest Political Office Building." In this very rare letter, Rasputin asks the recipient to assist in finding shelter for an orphan; it reads:

"Dear, Sorry for bothering you, please find a place for an orphan to stay, and give her shelter - Rasputin." .

Religious Manuscripts. The Coptic Language is the name used to refer to the last stage of the written Egyptian language. Coptic should more correctly be used to refer to the script rather than the language itself. Even though this script was introduced as far back as the 2nd century B.C., it is usually applied to the writing of the Egyptian language from the first century A.D. to the present day. The ancient Egyptian devised a writing system to record their spoken language over 6000 years ago. The first application seems to have been the calendar. The system started by giving each word a symbol, called hieroglyph. This convention was of course doomed because of the tremendous vocabulary it would have generated. Out of such ideas they took some of these hieroglyphs and associated a sound value to them which, when combined together, would spell out the spoken word.

After the 14th century the Church experienced a decline spiritually and in numbers. The dominance of the Ottoman Empire over Egypt in the early 16th century seemed to accelerate such decline. Production of Coptic Manuscripts slowed down to a trickle. This is an indication that Coptic books were not used as often as before in the Church, so there was no need to produce more.
